Classic SF&F You Should Have Read

Thursday, January 10th, 2013

The idea started, as so many do, with good intentions. Life, the Universe and Everything, Utah’s annual symposium on science fiction and fantasy (previously held at BYU, though not for the last couple of years because BYU’s administration includes poopheads), is being chaired this year by my son. And it’s been a lot of years since I’ve gone. And my daughter wants to go too. And so I thought, why not? I can attend, catch up with friends, trade a Utah February for a Wisconsin February (not any real bargain there), heckle my son, get revved up on my sf&f writing — all that good stuff.

Well. That was before I looked at our bank balance and checked the price on airline tickets. Also before my creative writing juices ran out of steam last year, leaving me unsure that I can justify the expenditure on writerly grounds. And yet the idea, once entertained, was hard to dismiss. And so I am going next month (Feb. 14-16), with my daughter, and will be appearing on a panel on Tolkien with my old thesis advisor. And I’ll be doing a presentation on classic sf&f you should be reading, though honestly, I’m not exactly certain how I got into that one, except that I’m sure it involved incautious volunteering around people who were paying far too much attention.

Gay Mormon Lit Anthology

Sunday, October 14th, 2012

Hi all! Progress on my current writing is slow (partly because I have a lot of paid work at the moment, which is definitely a good thing). However, I do have a news item to report.

A month or two ago, I was contacted by some people I know who are putting together an anthology of stories about the gay Mormon experience. They asked if I’d be interested in having a selection from No Going Back included in the anthology. I said yes. Since then, I’ve been spending odd moments poking around and looking at possible candidates for inclusion.

Quick Update

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Here’s a quick update, just to let people know that I haven’t died or anything…

Interviewed by Annette Lyon

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Not a lot of time to write today, and not a lot to say. However, I wanted to point anyone who might happen on this blog to my interview at Annette Lyon’s blog, which was posted yesterday. She asked me several things I don’t think I’d been asked before, and it was fun answering her questions. (Annette hasn’t reviewed No Going Back, but had commented positively on its non-didactic approach in a post over at the AML blog last January.)

Have fun everyone! Be good, stay warm, and try not to fall too far behind on your Christmas stuff! (as we’ve done).

I’m a Mormon Mommy! (Blogger)

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

Work responsibilities notwithstanding, my relationship to the 21st century is (as some of you will know) a somewhat reluctant one. I spend a lot of time on the Internet, but most of it’s for specific, fairly well-defined purposes. I haven’t done Facebook or Twitter. I’ve slowly been pulled into blogging, but it was only with publication of No Going Back that I acted on my longstanding intentions to create a personal website, and later this blog.

It therefore shouldn’t surprise anyone that it was (once again) my book that pulled me into involvement in yet another blogging venue. A while back, I emailed an acquaintance requesting suggestions on ways to both (a) spread news about my book, and (b) make readers more inclined to read it — particularly Mormon readers, many of whom seem naturally reluctant to pick up a book on a topic this controversial. She suggested that I try guest blogging at some of the wider-circulation sites within the Bloggernacle (as I gather the LDS blog world is sometimes called). A few emails later, and I was lined up to post a couple of guest posts at Mormon Mommy Blogs.

LDS Family Encyclopedia

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

Fed Ex delivered a big box on the doorstep today. It was full of books — contributor copies of The Latter-day Saint Family Encyclopedia, published this month by Thunder Bay Press. I’m listed as coauthor — together with Chris Bigelow, a longtime friend from the Mormon literary community who also coincidentally happens to be the publisher of No Going Back. Or not so coincidentally, as it turns out…

St. Paul Pioneer Press Notice

Monday, July 26th, 2010

So I have one more short but positive review to add to the list. This one appeared in last Friday’s St. Paul Pioneer Press, in a book column titled “Worthwhile midsummer fiction from Midwest writers.” You can follow the link to the article by clicking here, but there’s no real need to bother since I’ve reproduced the two paragraphs about No Going Back below:

King’s English Local Author Showcase July 13

Friday, June 25th, 2010

So guess what? I’m scheduled to appear at King’s English bookstore in Salt Lake City at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 13, as part of a Local Author Showcase. The way I understand it, four other authors and I will each read for up to five minutes from our books, answer questions, and sign book copies. Woo-hoo! My first reading/book signing! For more details, read here.

Mixed News

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

The last week or so has been kind of bittersweet from my perspective. The Whitney Awards were announced, and while I was very pleased to have been a finalist, I was unsurprised to discover that I didn’t win the award in my category. (The person who did win the award, Jamie Ford, is a very fine author whose book, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, is the one I thought probably would win, so I’m not complaining.)

Branching Out

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

News regarding my book has slowed, and it’s kind of boring to talk about the same topic all the time anyway. So I’m planning to start branching out. Sure, I’ll still include news about No Going Back, but I also plan to fill my once- or twice-weekly blogs with other topics as well, including writing in general, my own writing projects, Mormon literature, etc. Stay tuned!
