News regarding my book has slowed, and it’s kind of boring to talk about the same topic all the time anyway. So I’m planning to start branching out. Sure, I’ll still include news about No Going Back, but I also plan to fill my once- or twice-weekly blogs with other topics as well, including writing in general, my own writing projects, Mormon literature, etc. Stay tuned!

Sunday, February 14th, 2010No Going Back Discussion Questions
Thursday, January 7th, 2010One of my main motivations in writing No Going Back was to stimulate discussion, both about the book itself (hey! I’m an author, I like feedback; live with it) and about the topics it addresses.
Over Christmas break, I drafted a set of questions that I thought might help prompt interesting discussions among readers of my book. Sadly, the notebook where I wrote down my ideas disappeared… So here’s Take 2 at some “official” No Going Back discussion questions. Please feel free to post responses, additional suggested questions, etc. (more…)
Christmas Break
Monday, December 21st, 2009Heigh, ho. Christmas break coming up. I’m expecting traffic around here to be pretty slow, and I’ll be busy too, so you shouldn’t count on seeing anything interesting from now until after the first of the year.
Looking Forward to Some Great Conversations About Mormon Literature
Friday, December 4th, 2009I got word a few days ago that a new blog sponsored by the Association for Mormon Letters has now gone “live” over at http://blog.mormonletters.org. I have to say, I’ve seen the lineup of authors for December (I’m down as a potential occasional contributor), and I’m excited. It looks really good — like the kinds of conversations we used to have once upon a time at AML-List, the email discussion list sponsored by the Association for Mormon Letters. (AML-List technically continues, but for a variety of reasons has fallen onto hard times.)
Inaugural Post, in which Jonathan Dips His Toe into the Blogging World!
Saturday, October 24th, 2009Well, it’s happened at last. I’ve given in to the pressure, joined the 21st century (only about a decade late), and am now officially a blogger. Or at least, that’s what they tell me…
First, a bit about who I am. I’m Jonathan Langford, a professional informational writer and editor, a recently published novelist, husband, father of three, and a committed member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon, or LDS Church). The novel is titled No Going Back, published in fall 2009 by Zarahemla Books. It’s a coming-of-age story about a teenage Mormon kid who is same-sex attracted — in other words, gay — and it’s the main reason I’m starting this blog right now.
The current plan is for me to post here a couple of times a week, mostly about how things are going with my book (though I suspect I’ll branch out over time). Comments are welcome, indeed invited, and may be posted anonymously, though due to the nature of my book (a gay teen Mormon coming-of-age novel) I feel the need to prescreen comments before allowing them to be posted.
For more information about the book itself, please go to www.langfordwriter.com. And thanks for your interest!
Annette Lyon: NGB Avoids “Didactic Landmine”
Monday, January 18th, 2010I was reading a post over at the AML blog by Annette Lyon, an author of six LDS novels, when I started to get nervous. She was talking about the importance of not writing didactically, where the message drives the story. I was wondering what she would think of my novel, when I encountered the following:
